The live-action Avatar the Last Airbender began streaming on Netflix on Friday, and while fans of the original show may have complaints, they also want to know: Will there be an Avatar Season 2 on Netflix? Listen, we are weak, OK? If you give us ATLA content, we will watch it!

Adapted from the beloved animated Nickelodeon series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, which ran from 2005 to 2008, this new Avatar roughly follows the plot of the original first season. Gordon Cormier stars as Aang, the 12-year-old Airbender who also happens to be the Avatar—the master of all four elements—tasked with defeating the Fire Nation and saving the world. But unlike in the animated series, Aang still hasn’t learned water-bending by the end of Season 1. Get with it, little dude! Luckily he has Katara (played by Kiawentiio) to teach him. Zuko (played by Dallas Liu) still has a long way to go on his redemption journey, and evil Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) has more evil plans in the work in conjunction with Sozin’s Comet.

All eight episodes of Season 1 began streaming on Friday and ended with a promise of more to come. If you really want to know how it ends, you can always watch the animated series. But here’s what we know about Avatar Season 2 on Netflix.

Will the be an Avatar Season 2 on Netflix?

A live-action Avatar Season 2 has not been officially green-lit by Netflix. We don’t yet know whether it will happen, and it will likely depend on how well the show does for Netflix. Review haven’t been positive, but it doesn’t matter what critics think—it matters how many people stream the show.

Showrunner Albert Kim said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he didn’t think beyond Season 1 while making the series. “I didn’t focus beyond season one,” Kim said. “It was enough without the additional hurdle and challenge to get season one to the finish line, that’s been the focus. And again, having the benefit of hindsight, you can look back and see in the animated series each of the seasons feel slightly different.”

He did add that, if he does get a chance to adapt Season 2 and 3, the adaptation process might be different. “I think fans will recognize that the later seasons of the animated series are a little more serialized than the first season, so the process might vary a little bit in that regard. But we really don’t want to look ahead, I mean for nothing else if not to change its success so, that’s why the focus has just been getting to this finish line.”

That said, Kim did hint in another interview with Collider that he is already thinking about Katara’s future romance in upcoming seasons. (Either with Aang, which is what happens in the original cartoon, or with Zuko, which is a popular fan “ship.”) “If you look carefully, there are little hints, especially in the final episode of what Katara is saying about Aang. So, we are obviously aware of where it goes in the original series, but it’s more of a future issue and a future storyline to be dealt with, ” Kim said. “So I was, even for myself, I was very relieved to put a pin in it, so I wouldn’t have to deal with it in the first season. But yeah, it’ll be interesting to tackle that one.”

So even if Kim still doesn’t know if he’ll get to do future seasons, he’s at least thinking about it!

Avatar the Last Airbender Netflix Season 2 release date:

Netflix’s Avatar the Last Airbender does not yet have a season 2 release date, as the season has not yet been officially green-lit. If and when Netflix does announce Avatar Season 2, you should be prepared for a long wait. The first season began filming in November 2021, wrapped in June 2022, and then took over a year in post-production before it was finally released on Netflix in 2024.

Hopefully, it won’t take two-and-a-half years to make Season 2, but you should expect it to be at least a year or more after the official Season 2 announcement.

Again, this is all speculation, given that we don’t yet know if Netflix will even make a Season 2 for the live-action Avatar. It will likely depend on how well the first season does on Netflix. If you want to see Dallas Liu as Zuko join the Gaang, the best thing you can do is stream the show and tell your friends to stream it, too!
