Netflix might dominate the streaming stratosphere. However, in the words of Ethel Merman, “there’s no business like show business!”
The streamer is now set to produce The Crown creator Peter Morgan‘s latest project, Patriots, which is making its way to Broadway‘s Ethel Barrymore Theatre, per The New York Times.
According to a description featured on the play’s official website, Patriots takes place “after the fall of Soviet Russia” in 1991 and follows Boris Berezovsky, an oligarch who was instrumental in Vladimir Putin — who at the time was “the little-known deputy of St. Petersburg” — coming to power. However, eventually “Putin’s ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign.”
The show previously ran at both London’s Almeida Theater and the West End’s Noël Coward Theatre, per The Hollywood Reporter. Will Keen, who won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Putin last year, will take on the role in the Broadway production.
Meanwhile, Luke Thallon will reprise his role as Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch and poltician, and Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire, Dopesick) will portray Berezovsky, per Variety.
Although this is Netflix’s first project on Broadway, they also produced Stranger Things: The First Show, a stage production that served as a prequel to Stranger Things that debuted in the West End’s Phoenix Theatre last December, per Netflix’s Tudum. In addition to Netflix, Sonia Friedman Productions, who produced Stranger Things: The First Show alongside the streamer, will serve as a fellow lead producer on Patriots.
The official opening night for Patriots is Monday, April 22, but preview shows start on Monday, April 1.
