The intense Season 1 finale of Apple TV+‘s Criminal Record not only answered several long-held questions, but it raised several new ones, too. Mainly, fans are curious if they’ve seen the last of Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) and Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) or if a Criminal Record Season 2 is in the cards!

In its final episode, Paul Rutman’s riveting crime thriller wrapped the investigation into an anonymous domestic violence call, the murder of Adelaide Burrowes, and the conviction of Errol Mathis. But judging from that final scene, the show’s compelling cat-and-mouse chase between Lenker and Hegarty could continue — if Apple TV+ and those involved with the series allow.

So is there more to Criminal Record‘s story? Or is this the end of out time with Lenker and Hegarty?

Curious if Criminal Record Season 2 is a go? Wondering if Apple TV+ renewed or canceled Criminal Record ahead of its Season 1 finale? Here’s everything we know about the future of the series.

Will There Be A Criminal Record Season 2 On Apple TV+? Everything We Know

As of February 21, Criminal Record Season 1 finale day, Apple TV+ had yet to renew or cancel the series. However, when Jumbo guest starred on Watch What Happens Live Sunday Night, she essentially confirmed the series will continue. When host Andy Cohen asked if there would be a Criminal Record, she replied. “There will be, yeah.” (Decider reached out to reps for the show to inquire about any Season 2 updates and will update this post when we hear back.)

Criminal Record wasn’t marketed as a limited series, which suggests a continuation is possible, and with a 91% Tomatometer score from 44 Rotten Tomato reviews, it’s clear the first season was well-received by critics. With such compelling leads, it makes sense that Apple TV+ would consider exploring more of Criminal Record‘s story — especially since the final scene can serve as both a satisfying end point or the start of a whole new direction for the show.

While we await more news on Criminal Record Season 2, let’s review that Season 1 ending and see what potential lies ahead.

Criminal Record Ending Explained:

If you’re looking for a detailed finale recap, Decider’s Criminal Record Ending Explained article has you covered. For the purposes of our Season 2 discussion, however, here’s what you need to know about Season 1’s end.

During DCI Hegarty’s testimony, he claimed that as soon as he learned there were doubts of Errol’s conviction he did everything in his power to undo the damage. He met with Lenker and revealed he turned over a copy of Errol’s confession tape, because “a bullet to the gut, it concentrates the mind.” Hegarty claimed he wanted a fresh start and if they wanted him out, he made peace with that. But an outside officer called in to examine the video said “the tape was evidentially inconclusive,” so Hegarty remained good to go, professionally speaking.

“You think I’m prejudiced…Who are you to judge your own actions? If I was a fucking racist, I’d be the first to know, right?” he says. “But then Errol…”

“Nine days out of 10 you’d have been all over every lab report, alibi, and comma,” Lenker replies. “So why not that time? Why not for him?”

After Errol’s release, he hosted a barbecue with his dad, Patrick, and the neighborhood beside the mural of Adelaide and Doris Mathis (Cathy Tyson). Lenker stopped to ask, “Why didn’t you tell someone? Your mom, your defense team, Sonya?” Errol said that after everything Patrick had been through he didn’t want to call him on the stand and give him more pain. “I believed him. He heard what he heard,” Errol added. “I’ll knock you flat. I’ll knock you flat.”

Haunted by loose ends, Lenker returned to evidence and found the tape of Hegarty talking to Patrick in hospital room. Through audio and flashbacks, we learned Patrick was distracted by a cartoon during questioning, and “I’ll knock you flat,” was a quote from the show that he was mimicking, not a recollection of Errol and his mom’s argument.

After realizing Hegarty edited the tapes and fixed the evidence, she called him and said, “He wasn’t talking about Errol, he was just quoting some cartoon off the telly. And you knew that, and you poisoned him. You poisoned his whole life with that, didn’t you? What happened to follow the facts? What happened to that?” Hegarty, looking absolutely villainous, stayed silent for a few seconds before hanging up, placing his phone on the table, and giving the series an absolutely chilling end — one that perhaps leaves the door open for more?

A potential Season 2 could check back in with Season 1 characters, follow another intense investigation, and either see Lenker working alongside Hegarty again or trying to take him down for good.
