Netflix has decided not to move forward with a film series based on Rick Riordan‘s “Kane Chronicles” books.

The author, who is best known for his book “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” which has now become a hit Disney+ series, shared the news while responding to a fan’s question on Goodreads.

“Right now, Kane Chronicles is in ‘turnaround,’ which means Netflix has decided not to move forward and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked,” he wrote. “Now it depends on whether another studio would like to step in, assume the preproduction costs, and move forward.”

Riordan added: “This is not at all unusual. It happens, I would guess, with the majority of film projects. Also, the streaming industry as a whole is shrinking their development slate right now, meaning they are cancelling more content and making less content. Kane got caught in that trend, despite the strong success of Percy TV.”

Riordan announced in 2020 that a Kane Chronicles film trilogy was in development at the streamer.

In a 2022 blog post, Riordan revealed that the first film, based on 2010’s “The Red Pyramid,” was written by Star Trek: Prodigy writer Diandra Pendleton-Thompson.

His three books follow two teens, Carter and Sadie Kane, who are descendants of Egyptian pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great.

In a later series of spinoff novels called “Demigods and Magicians,” characters from “The Kane Chronicles” crossed over into the “Percy Jackson” universe.

The final episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted on January 30 and Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the show’s success during the company’s latest quarterly earnings call. On the call, Iger announced that the show had been renewed for Season 2, adding that the series has been streamed for over 110 million hours (roughly 20.6 million total views).

Netflix has not yet commented on the Kane Chronicles cancellation.
