Marvel has reportedly begun rethinking its next steps amid the lackluster year the studio experienced in 2023, coupled with the legal troubles plaguing star Jonathan Majors.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avengers 5, the first of the new Avengers films, was set to be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty after Major’s character. But the film will be getting a new title after Majors’ recent conviction and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s disappointing performance in the box office, where it only grossed $476 million. The new Avengers 5 title has not yet been announced.

THR reports that sources familiar with the matter claim the studio was already planning to change course and remove Kang’s name from the title before Majors was found guilty.

The actor was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of reckless assault and harassment after his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari, claimed that he had become physically violent with her during a dispute in a private car. Majors initially faced four charges of assault, harassment, and aggravated harassment. The actor has since denied causing any of Jabbari’s injuries.

Marvel swiftly cut ties with the actor after he was found guilty in December 2023.

It is unclear if the studio plans to recast Kang the Conqueror or if a new villain will be introduced in the franchise.

The actor’s sentencing was originally scheduled for Feb. 6, but it has since been delayed to April 8; his defense team is pushing to have the verdict thrown out. He is currently facing up to 12 months in prison.

The Avengers 5 release date has not been announced yet. It was previously scheduled to premiere in theaters in May 2026.
