New Movies on Streaming: ‘The Marvels’ + More

This week’s new movies on VOD are a testament to the strength and power of women. From the superheroes in The Marvels to the strong women of The Color Purple, these films are among the best of the best to be released this week.

Also out this week is the Korean action film The Childe, the newest from writer-director Park Hoon-jung. In this new release, an aspiring boxer named Marco (Kang Tae-Ju) living in the Phillippines and caring for his ailing mother, sets out on a trip to South Korea to find his long-estranged father. Along the way, he realizes he’s being followed by a mysterious man known only as the Nobleman, and he realizes that the trip he’s embarking on is no family reunion, it’s a fight for his life and about uncovering hidden truths about his own past.

The Marvels

One of last year’s entries in the MCU, The Marvels, is out now on demand. The film brought together Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel with Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel (a.k.a. Kamala Khan) and Teyonah Parrish’s Monica Rambeau, all of whom join forces as “the Marvels” and use their powers to fight an intergalactic battle against the Kree, led by leader Dar-Benn (Zaxe Ashton). Despite the fact that the film is action-packed, brimming with that signature Marvel humor, and filled with MCU cameos, including appearances from Samuel L. Jackson, Hailee Steinfeld, and Tessa Thompson, it wasn’t popular at the box office, so now’s the time to give it the chance it deserves.

The Color Purple

After spending almost a month in theaters, the newest version of The Color Purple is out this week on streaming. A vibrant musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel featuring songs from the hit Broadway show, the film stars Fantasia Barrino as Celie (the role originally played by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1985 film), along with an incredible ensemble cast that includes Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson, under the direction of Blitz Bazawule.
