New Movies on Streaming: ‘Napoleon,’ ‘He Went That Way,’ + More

There’s a wide assortment of great films that are new on VOD this week, from Ridley Scott’s new historical drama Napoleon, to the creepy road trip thriller He Went That Way starring Zachary Quinto and Jacob Elordi (marking workhorse Elordi’s fourth film to come out over the past year).

Also out this week is the great new documentary The Disappearance of Shere Hite, a look at the life and work of writer and sex educator Shere Hite, whose writings, specifically about the female orgasm, brought her fame and notoriety in the 1970s and ’80s. Despite the popularity of her work, Hite (who died in 2020) never reached the same level of name recognition as many of her peers, and the film takes a look at her keen and sometimes provocative observations. Dakota Johnson appears in the film as the narrator and providing the voice to many of Hite’s writings.

Napoleon

Ridley Scott’s newest film, Napoleon, reunited him with his Gladiator star Joaquin Phoenix, who assumes the title role. The film depicts the notorious French emperor as he rose to power during the French Revolution. The film depicts the leader’s triumphs on the battlefield as well as his courtship and eventual marriage with the wealthy widow Josephine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby). Rupert Everett and Tahar Rahim co-star.

He Went That Way

Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto star in He Went That Way, a film that’s notable for a few reasons: first, it’s probably the only road trip film you’ll ever see where an animal trainer (Quinto) and the celebrity chimp he trains pick up a hitchhiking serial killer (Elordi). Second, it is sadly the first and last feature film of director Jeffrey Darling, a commercial director who made this film in 2022 but died in a surfing accident before it was released. Based on real-life events, the film is ominous and tense (though, surprisingly enough, not the most nefarious movie we’ve ever seen that stars a celebrity chimp, that would be Nope). But it’s still a thrilling ride and Quinto and Elordi are a great on-screen pair.
