Following his highly anticipated return to The Daily Show last week, Jon Stewart clapped back at his critics.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Stewart kicked off this Monday night’s (Feb. 19) show by pointing out that the initial response to his return was “universally glowing.” This was immediately followed by a video clip from The Hollywood Reporter‘s coverage of the aftermath, which said, “Jon Stewart is facing massive backlash from Democrats over his comments about Joe Biden.”

Stewart then quipped, “OK, maybe not universal.”

For those who didn’t tune in to Stewart’s return to The Daily Show last week, he called out both Biden and Donald Trump for being “the oldest people ever to run for president — breaking by only four years the record that they set the last time they ran.”

“What’s crazy is thinking that we are the ones as voters who must silence concerns and criticisms,” he said during the Feb. 12 taping. “It is the candidates’ job to assuage concerns — not the voters’ job, not to mention them.”

He added, “So the good news is: I’m not saying you don’t have to worry about who wins the election. I’m saying you have to worry about every day before it, and every day after, forever.”

THR‘s video featured various tweets with reactions to Stewart’s first show back, including one post from political and sports commentator Keith Olbermann, who called Stewart a “both sideist fraud.”

However, Stewart highlighted that most of his critics slammed him on X (formerly known as Twitter), where he claimed “everything” gets backlash.

“I’ve seen Twitter tell labradoodles to go fuck themselves,” he joked. “Labradoodles. I just think it’s better to deal head-on with what’s an apparent issue to people. I mean, we’re just talking here!”

Another tweet featured in THR‘s coverage — this one hailing from Trump’s niece Mary L. Trump — was shown during last night’s episode, in which she said Stewart’s “‘both sides are the same’ rhetoric” is “not funny” and “a potential disaster for democracy.”

Afterward, Stewart exclaimed, “It was one fucking show! It was just one fucking show. It was 20 minutes. I did 20 minutes of one fucking show. But I guess as the famous saying goes, ‘Democracy dies in discussion.'”

He jokingly proceeded, “But look, I have sinned against you, I’m sorry. It was never my intention to say out loud what I saw with my eyes and then brain. I can do better. I can has learning. I can has it!”

In terms of where he could go “to study the particulars of unquestioning propaganda,” Stewart claimed that he “would need mentorship,” as he segued into a clip of Tucker Carlson ahead of his controversial interview with Vladimir Putin.

Nonetheless, in terms of the newest episodes on Comedy Central, Decider contributor Joel Keller encouraged prospective viewers to “STREAM IT,” explaining that “while Jon Stewart may not be everyone’s cup of tea anymore, given how divisive we’ve become as a society, his ability to look over the entire political landscape and find things to skewer on both sides is what made his original run on The Daily Show so effective.”

The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11/10c on Comedy Central. Next-day streaming is available on Paramount+.
