Dennis Quaid To Play ‘Happy Face’ Serial Killer In Paramount+ Series

Dennis Quaid is set to star as the titular character Happy Face in an upcoming Paramount+ series.

Annaleigh Ashford will also star in the series inspired by the podcast of the same name from iHeartMedia and Melissa Moore. In the podcast, Moore frequently references her own life story as well as her book with M. Bridget Cook titled “Shattered Silence.”

At age 15, Moore discovered that her father was the serial killer known as “Happy Face,” due to the smiley faces he drew on evidence.

In her adulthood, Moore had changed her name and kept her identity a secret while her father has been in prison serving a life sentence.

According to Deadline, the official description of the series reads: “Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life. In a race against the clock, Melissa must find out if an innocent man is going to be put to death for a crime her father committed. Throughout, she discovers the impact her father had on his victims’ families and must face a reckoning of her own identity.”

Quaid’s most recent gig with Paramount+ was the series Lawmen: Bass Reeves, where he played Sherill Lynn (a Civil War veteran and Deputy U.S. Marshall who recruits Bass Reeves). He has previously starred on the shows Merry Happy Whatever, The Art of More, and Vegas.

Among Quaid’s film credits include The Rookie, The Day After Tomorrow, Traffic, Frequency, The Parent Trap, The Right Stuff, Breaking Away, and Midway among many others.

Happy Face, which is slated to premiere on the streamer in 2025, will begin production on its eight-episode first season this spring in Vancouver. CBS Studios will produce.

Jennifer Cacicio serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the series. Moore also executive produces alongside Robert and Michelle King (under their King Size Productions banner that has an overall deal with CBS Studios), Liz Glotzer (King Size), iHeartMedia’s Conal Byrne, Will Pearson, and Jordana Mollick.

The final episode of the series will be directed and executive produced by Michael Showalter.
