Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang hugged host Shane Gillis during last night’s goodbyes, implying that he and the touring stand-up comedian are on good terms.

Gillis was once hired as an SNL cast member but was fired one week later after some of his past offensive jokes—where he mocked a Chinese accent and made homophobic comments—had surfaced.
Just one month ago, Yang kept a visible distance from host Dave Chappelle during cast goodbyes, with his fellow cast member Sarah Sherman seemingly comforting him.
Chappelle has been known for making transphobic and homophobic remarks during his comedy specials. Chappelle, however, has been less apologetic than Gillis.
“I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries,” Gillis posted to X/Twitter at the time of his controversy. “I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses. I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said.”
He added: “My intention is never to hurt anyone but I am trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks.”
During last night’s opening monologue, Gillis didn’t appear to tone down his comedy routine for the audience. He made several risque jokes, including some about Down Syndrome and being a “gay” kid (but not in the homosexual sense). He also mentioned his 2019 firing and joked that he shouldn’t really be there on stage.
Yang has become an audience favorite since joining the cast in 2018. The reason he is at the center of these discussions is that he is the NBC sketch show’s first-ever Chinese-American cast member and third openly gay male cast member.
