The Screen Actors Guild has set new guidelines after an intimacy coordinator recently went viral for discussing her work with Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman in the upcoming thriller, Miller’s Girl.

In the new guidelines, intimacy coordinators must seek permission from actors before publicly discussing details about their experiences filming intimate scenes. Intimacy coordinators who fail to maintain their confidentiality possibly risk being removed from the Guild’s registry after an investigation.

“Members have to feel safe, comfortable and confident in engaging with intimacy coordinators,” a Guild source said in a statement to Deadline.

The new standards state, “Intimacy coordinators should maintain the confidentiality of an actor’s work and experience in performing highly sensitive scenes unless they have the actor’s permission to publicly share this information. The public release of details about an actor’s scene work or confidences entrusted to the intimacy coordinator without the performer’s consent is unacceptable.”

The decision comes swiftly after intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona spoke to The Daily Mail about her experience helping Freeman and Ortega film intimate scenes for Miller’s Girl, considering the actors have an age gap of 31 years.

“Part of my job too is supporting her decisions. I adapt to whatever is the comfort level of my actors, especially on a production like this where there is a large age gap between the actors,” Arjona said.

Miller’s Girl tells the story of Ortega’s Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old student with a gift for writing who comes under the mentorship of her teacher, 52-year-old Jonathan Miller, a failed writer.

Arjona explained that she discussed both the “level of nudity” and which “simulated sex scenes” were expected with the actors prior to filming. She also said the cast and crew were given ample notice of what was planned for the shoot 48 hours before filming, though they “also have the option on the day to change their mind.”

The intimacy coordinator also added, “I’m hyper aware of both of my talent and making sure that we’re consistently checking in and that at no point are any of their boundaries being surpassed. And again, making sure – especially with someone who’s significantly younger – that they are giving continuous consent.”

According to The Daily Mail, they filmed various sex scenes to test with audiences. But the film has reportedly been met with criticism regarding their age difference, with some viewers saying it left them feeling “uncomfortable.”

Miller’s Girl is available to stream on VOD.
