Brooklyn Nine-Nine star André Braugher‘s sudden passing in December took many by surprise. But Chelsea Peretti recently opened up to Seth Meyers about the bizarre experiences she had while grieving her friend and former co-star.

“I went to London over Christmas,” Peretti recalled during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “And people were coming up to me and they’re like, ‘Andre died.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ They’re like, ‘How do you feel?’ I’m like, ‘Bad?’”

She added that, on another occasion at a Santa Barbara film festival, she became overwhelmed with emotion while walking the red carpet.

“My movie was there, and on the red carpet, the guy goes, ‘What’s your favorite Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode?’ And I’m talking about it. He’s like, ‘Who was funniest?’ I’m like, ‘Andre’ and I just burst into tears. It was so horrible because to be a celebrity, you’re supposed to be like a complete robot,” she said. Peretti then turned to Meyers and told him, “You know this. You do it.”

Meyers was in complete agreement, adding, “Yeah, I’m good at it,” as the audience laughed along.

The actress said she then “burst into tears on camera” while being recorded by the interviewer.

“I’m just like, ‘This is a nightmare,'” she recalled. “And my publicist is like, ‘Um, uh…’ And then he goes, ‘Well, one last question: what are you bingeing?,’ while I’m crying. I’m like [mimics sobbing], ‘Beef!'”

Meyers then jokingly praised Peretti for plugging Beef, even through the tears. “You can’t let Andre’s passing get in the way of a good plug,” he said.

Braugher passed away in December 2023 following a brief, private battle with lung cancer. He was 61 at the time.

Peretti released a touching statement praising her former co-star after his passing.

“Love you Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep,” she wrote.

“I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick. Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t,” Peretti’s statement read.
