Joy Behar is calling for term limits in Britain’s monarchy after King Charles III, who waited his entire life to ascend to the throne, was diagnosed with an unidentified form of cancer.

On this morning’s episode of The View, the Hot Topics panel sent “good vibes” to the royal, who began a “schedule of regular treatment” earlier this week that has since forced him to “postpone public-facing duties.”

The news of his diagnosis comes a little more than one year after he took over for his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022 following a 70-year reign.

According to Behar, the Queen should’ve passed the baton to her son much earlier.

“Poor Charles,” the comedian said. “I mean, the woman was in the position for 70 years — the longest reign. I think she could’ve used some term limits. You know what I mean?”

Behar continued, “Why not step down and let Charles have his day in the sun? Poor guy. He finally gets to be king and now he has an illness. It doesn’t seem fair. There’s something wrong about it.”

Like Behar, co-host Sunny Hostin expressed her sympathy for King Charles.

“King Charles has only been in the job for 18 months and he is so much more progressive I think than the Queen was,” she pointed out. “He was giving this speech about climate change. He’s meeting with politicians. It’s just a terrible thing that he’s not going to be able to continue doing some of that right now. But I think his prognosis is pretty good. We’re hopeful.”

Despite the news, Hostin attempted to look at the bright side of things. With Prince Harry reportedly rushing back to London to be with his family, this might be the “kicker” that brings their fractured group back together.

“I think Harry’s in a lot of pain because of this breakup with his family — this rift with his family,” Hostin speculated. “If this brings him closer to his father, I think that’s sort of the silver lining in it.”

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday (Feb. 5) that doctors “identified a form of cancer” in the King during a “hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement.”

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” they said in the statement. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
