Alan Ritchson learned a valuable lesson while auditioning for a major Marvel film.

The Reacher star spoke with Men’s Health about the roles and missed opportunities that led up to his titular role in the Prime Video hit and reflected on auditioning for 2011’s Thor, claiming that he “didn’t take it seriously,” per Variety.

“I was like, ‘They’ll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting,'” he recalled.

However, Ritchson was sorely mistaken, as those behind the casting of the film later told his team that he lacked “the craft” necessary for the mighty God of Thunder. Chris Hemsworth scored the role, and has since appeared in nine MCU films as Thor, per IMDb.

However, the audition ended up motivating Ritchson to rehearse his audition scenes and eventually join an acting class to sharpen his skills. Prior to losing out on Thor, his major acting credits included appearing as Aquaman in Smallville in 2005 and playing Thad Castle in Blue Mountain State in 2010. While the missed opportunity certainly wasn’t his last, he scored some guest spots on some hit TV shows and starred as Rafael in the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, per Men’s Health.

Ritchson highlighted a brutal truth of the entertainment industry that he has discovered over the course of his career.

“The industry’s funny,” he told the outlet. “It can’t be relied on. You have to be very patient with it.”

Reacher was renewed for a third season last December, and last month it was revealed that the upcoming installment will be based on Persuader, the seventh book in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. Season 2 ranked as “the #1 title on Prime Video worldwide across both series and movies in 2023 during its premiere weekend” in terms of viewership, per a Jan. 24 press release.

Ritchson recently appeared on The View, where he opened up about going full-blown Jack Reacher mode IRL and chasing after a burglar while on a date with his wife.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Reacher are streaming on Prime Video.
