Whoopi Goldberg had a momentary flub on this morning’s episode of The View as she and her co-hosts discussed one of the biggest issues of the upcoming 2024 election. During a chat about inflation and rising prices at everything from grocery stores to fast food joints, Goldberg blanked when trying to name Uber, which has become rather infamous for its surge pricing in recent years.

The moderator kicked off the segment by calling out Wendy’s, which caused a stir yesterday with its plan to implement surge pricing, or as Goldberg called it, “basically just price gouging.”

Starting in 2025, Wendy’s will introduce dynamic pricing in which the cost of menu items will vary based on time or weather, per CBS.

To put it mildly, Goldberg was not on board. She told her co-hosts that prices are creeping up “in many places now,” adding, “It’s happening in supermarkets — people are saying, ‘Well, you know, the price of food is so high,’ not realizing it’s not the government that’s making the price of food so high, it’s the supermarkets that are making the price of food so high.”

As the studio audience applauded, Goldberg continued, “The same thing seems to be happening with, with um—” as she mimed holding the handles of a scooter, but couldn’t seem to find the word she was looking for.

“Look at me, I’m doing a scooter like I’m on a scooter,” she said, poking fun at herself.

Thankfully, Alyssa Farah Griffin caught on, suggesting “Uber,” while Sara Haines asked incredulously, “Uber moped?!”

Goldberg confirmed she had been trying to think of Uber, and while it was unclear what exactly happened next, whatever it was caused her to look directly into the camera with a perplexed expression. Our take is that she was interacting with a producer (likely EP Brian Teta) offscreen, as she asked “What?” then paused before replying, “I just want to, can I make my, can I just get to the — OK.”

Thankfully, she did get the chance to share her take, telling the panel, “So many, like Uber, seem to be doing the same thing … what the hell is going on?!”

As she told the audience that she had been instructed to tell them Wendy’s had “clarified things” about their “dynamic pricing” plan, Goldberg looked right in the camera and declared once again, “It’s a price gouge!”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
